Then She Left

 

 

Jason L. Huskey

 

They gather about the body,

a dozen necks crooked toward the asphalt,

ghosts of breath gossiping before class.

She made the Dean's list last semester,

 

the one for underachieving future accountants—

bits of her brain now calculating the interest

of her classmates from the cigarette butts

 in the gutter.  She minored in public relations.

 

She was smiling as the absent vehicle

tore her to the mush at their sneakers.

Her eyes curved in a kitten-like way—like the night

we chased Orion down

the delta of the Eridanus.
